The ISGS collected data along the Chicago coastline from 2022-2023 to map the geology, sand thickness, and sand extent within 3 km from shore. Data collection included subsurface mapping onshore using GPR within 18 of Chicago's beaches, offshore subsurface mapping using seismic reflection methods, sediment coring, and sediment grab sampling. This data was compiled and integrated with the 2020 LiDAR bathymetric dataset from the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, which was used to delineate sand from non-sandy lake-bottom substrates based on textural differences. Two GIS layers were created from this dataset: (1) a map of sand thickness and extent, which is presented as a raster file, and (2) a shapefile of geological map units established across the Chicago littoral zone.
