Description:
Abstract:
Note: The original metadata file was written by ImageAmerica. There are a few additions by ISGS required for archival and access in the Survey's enterprise GIS.

The Des Plaines images are one-foot resolution digital images which have been ortho-rectified to accuracy criteria required for use of the images at 1'=200' (1:2,400 scale). These black and white images cover approximately 450 square miles of the Des Plaines Watershed in southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois and were acquired during leaf-off vegetative conditions. The complete set of images and project index are distributed on 28 CDs. [ISGS note: and on the Illinois Natural Resources Geospatial Data Clearinghouse.]

Purpose:
These ortho-images were created as a base for determining flood risk.

These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. Although useful in a GIS as a reference base layer for maps, the data set has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.

Supplemental_Information:
Each set of CD's consists of image files (27 CDs) and an ArcView project index (1 CD). Most image CDs contain 10 image files. Each file is formatted in standard geotiff format. Tile boundaries and internal image pixels are oriented to the IL State Plane, East coordinate system. [ISGS note: NAD83] The extent of most image tiles is 8000 x 8000 US Survey feet. Image file names correspond to the State Plane coordinates of the southwest corner of the tile. These datasets have been validated for completeness and accuracy by the USGS. A test of the ortho-image positions against 29 ground check points produced RMSEs within the x and y tolerances of 3.1-feet (maximum RMSE for use at 1:2400 scale û 1"=200'). Final RMSE x = 2.67 feet. Final RMSE y = 2.08 feet.

Process_Description:
Panoramic digital images were acquired from 17,500 feet above mean terrain using the Direct Digital Panoramic (DDP-1) camera. Onboard GPS and inertial navigation system data were used to derive camera position and attitude during data processing. Preprocessing, bore-site adjustment, and ortho-rectification were performed on the full project using automated processing in SocketSet photogrammetric software and proprietary software. Radiometric adjustments were applied to reduce brightness variations between images and to enhance image contrast.
