Abstract:
This is a digital version of the corresponding ISGS geologic map, Quaternary Deposits of Illinois. The spatial reference is geographic coordinates (longitude, latitude), decimal degrees, NAD27 Lambert Conformal Conic, known in ArcGIS as NAD_1927_Lambert_Conformal_Conic which is the projection of the source map. The nominal scale is 1:500,000. This dataset shows Quaternary deposits near the land surface with overlays of loess thickness contours, moraines, and glacial limits. A highly generalized version of Lineback 1979 was produced by ESRI in 1984. The intention of the 2021 project which produced this database, ILQuatDeposits1979, was to digitally archive the original Lineback 1979 map in the U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Map Schema (GeMS). More information on the history of this dataset can be read in the Process Steps of this metadata. Eight Chicago area counties include data which may reflect the Willman and Lineback 1970 map instead of Lineback 1979. Outside of those eight counties this dataset matches Lineback 1979. This GeMS conversion project was funded in part by U.S. Geological Survey NCGMP award number G20AC00371, 2020. The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as necessarily representing the official policies, either expressed or implied, of the U.S. Government.
Purpose:
This data compilation is intended to provide an overview of the geology of the map area. The data do not replace the need for detailed site-specific studies. The information is not appropriate for, and is not to be used as, a geodetic, legal, or engineering base. The information has no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor.

ILQuatDeposits1979.gdb is a composite geodataset that conforms to "GeMS (Geologic Map Schema)--a standard format for the digital publication of geologic maps", available at http://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Info/standards/GeMS/. Metadata records associated with each element within the geodataset contain more detailed descriptions of their purposes, constituent entities, and attributes. An OPEN shapefile versions of the dataset is also available. It consists of shapefiles, DBF files, and delimited text files and retains all information in the native geodatabase, but some programming will likely be necessary to assemble these components into usable formats. These metadata were prepared with the aid of script GeMS_FGDC1_Arc10.py, version of 5 October 2021.

The data conform to generally-accepted mapping standards for 1:500,000-scale geological maps, but locational accuracy has not been verified in any quantitative way. A project to preserve a GeMS compliant version of Lineback 1979 was funded in part by U.S. Geological Survey NCGMP STATEMAP award number G20AC00371, 2020. The goal of this project (funded in part by U.S. Geological Survey NCGMP award number G20AC00371, 2020) was to quality check, convert to GeMS, and archive the best available GIS dataset representing the Lineback 1979 map. An assessment found that an early, but highly generalized, version of the Lineback (1979) map which was digitized by ESRI in 1984 and made available on the Illinois Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (https://clearinghouse.isgs.illinois.edu/data/geology/quaternary-deposits-1979) was not a suitable input for this project. The unpublished, hybrid dataset mentioned in the above process step was determined to be the best available GIS dataset representing Lineback 1979.

Process_Description:
Scanning and re-digitization of the original Lineback (1979) map took place in the 1990s up until 2003, by Barb Stiff (ISGS), who was assisted by students and hourlies under her direction. The Lineback (1979) map was digitized from the original 1:250,000 compilation maps or larger scale field or work maps of the original mappers (DuMontelle, Follmer, Gross, Jacobs, Kempton, Lineback, McKay and Reed). Because of greater detail, the Willman and Lineback (1970) 1:250,000 scale map was digitized and sutured to the Lineback (1979) map in the Chicago region. This resulted in an unpublished, hybrid GIS file based on the Lineback map (94 of 102 Illinois counties) and Willman and Lineback 1970 (portions of 8 [Chicago-area] of 102 Illinois counties).

The re-digitized (unpublished, hybrid) version of the Lineback map was reviewed by David Grimley (ISGS), and an hourly (Colby Brown) under his direction. They compared the digital file with scanned and georegistered images of Lineback (1979) and Willman and Lineback 1970 to check for accuracy of the linework, polygon coding, and completeness. 94 of the 102 counties in Illinois (outside of Chicago region) were checked for consistency with the original Lineback map; comparisons were made by overlaying the GIS feature dataset with a georeferenced scanned image of the original Lineback (1979) map; comparisons were mostly made at the 1:100,000 scale. 8 of the 102 counties in Illinois (Lake, Cook, Du Page, most of Will, NE Grundy, eastern Kendall, eastern Kane, and eastern McHenry) were checked for consistency of polygon contacts and symbolization with either the original Lineback (1979) map or the Willman and Lineback (1970) Chicago area surficial map. About 110 polygons (of 9483 total) were fixed that had the wrong unit name or symbol. About 31 polygons were added (many are water polys in the Illinois River Valley) that were on the Lineback (1979) map but had not been digitized before; these were added with the polygon cut tool.
