Description:
Abstract:
This feature dataset contains wetlands and deepwater habitats in Illinois is of 1987 based on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) data.

This feature dataset was quickly assembled from old Arc/Info coverages to produce a general representation of the state of Illinois and has not been reviewed or quality-controlled in any way and is not supported.

Attributes include NWI and IDNR identifiers and text designation of habitat. The data are in the Geographic Coordinate System, decimal degrees, NAD83. There are 13 habitat designations. Some examples are Bottomland Forest, Emergent Lake, Intermittent Riverine, Open Water Wetlands, and Swamp.

More recent data may be available at the NWI web site (<http://www.fws.gov/nwi/>). Data are available for download at that site by 1:24,000-scale and 1:100,000-scale quadrangle. Original NWI metadata are also available there.

Purpose:
The data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base. The data set was not and is not intended as a substitute for surveyed locations, such as can be determined by a registered Public Land Surveyor. The data have no legal basis in the definition of boundaries or property lines.
Supplemental_Information:
In July, 2007 the data were transferred to storage in the SDE data model and 102 county coverages were appended into a single statewide layer. At that time the edition number was designated 20070719. The previous edition was 1.0.

Data were are topologically complete at the time data were stored as Arc/Info coverages. No additional information.
Completeness_Report:
Wetlands and deepwater habitat identified as of 1980-1987 (depending on location) and based on the definitions of USFWS at the time of database construction. Areas down to .01 acres (ARC generated area) were included; many farmed wetlands were not digitized. Due to the dynamics of wetland systems, boundaries and classifications change over time.

Any additions to the National Wetlands Inventory since 1987 are not included.

Process_Description:
102 county-by-county coverages (<county_name>/wtlds*) were appended into a statewide coverage. New coverage was copied to double precision. Data were projected from ISGS custom Lambert Conformal Conic projection to Geographic Coordinate System, decimal degrees, NAD83. Field NAME was added. Text habitat designations were added to the NAME field using a look-up table based on ILLCODE. No QA/QC was performed.

Data were loaded into ArcSDE. Metadata updated.
