Description:
Abstract:
Polygon outlines of Oil, Gas, and Gas Storage Fields in Illinois, with attributes for field code, field name, and field type. This is intended as a general cartographic reference for petroleum-related fields in the state based on available well data.
Purpose:
To help the oil and gas industry by delineating the general outlines of Oil, Gas, and Gas Storage Fields in Illinois based on available well data. This dastaset is suitable for use at 1:24,000 scale.

CREATION OF SELECTION STATEMENTS FOR WELL STATUS GROUPING BY FIELD_TYPE:
Oil and Gas well data containing FIELDCODE, FIELDNAME, and well STATUS were pulled from the ISGS Oracle Wells and Borings Database. Summary statistics were performed on the input table/point layer (IMS_ILOIL_PAYSTRAT) to get unique well status codes, which were then manually assigned and used to group multiple well STATUS types into three categories (field types): Oil wells, Gas wells, and Gas Storage wells. (Note: some assumptions were made about Undesignated Injection Wells [open and plugged], and generally erred toward these wells being categorized as OIL.) The resultant file was used for subsequent Selection, Buffer, and Dissolve steps to obtain unique oilfield codes/names for each of the three field types: OIL, GAS, and GAS STORAGE.
SQL where clause statements for ArcGIS Pro Select By Attributes tool:
Wells for Field_Type = GAS: STATUS = 'CBM' OR STATUS = 'CBMP' OR STATUS = 'CMM' OR STATUS = 'CMMP' OR STATUS = 'GAS' OR STATUS = 'GASP' OR STATUS = 'GASX' OR STATUS = 'TAG'
Wells for Field_Type = GAS STORAGE: STATUS = 'OBS' OR STATUS = 'OBSG' OR STATUS = 'OBSOP' OR STATUS = 'OBSP' OR STATUS = 'GSTG' OR STATUS = 'GSTGP' OR STATUS = 'INJG' OR STATUS = 'INJGP'
Wells for Field_Type = OIL: STATUS = 'INJ' OR STATUS = 'INJP' OR STATUS = 'DA' OR STATUS = 'DAO' OR STATUS = 'DAOGP' OR STATUS = 'DAOP' OR STATUS = 'DAP' OR STATUS = 'INJCM' OR STATUS = 'INJCMP' OR STATUS = 'INJSW' OR STATUS = 'INJSWP' OR STATUS = 'INJW' OR STATUS = 'INJWO' OR STATUS = 'INJWOG' OR STATUS = 'INJWOP' OR STATUS = 'INJWP' OR STATUS = 'INJWS' OR STATUS = 'INJWSP' OR STATUS = 'INJX' OR STATUS = 'JA' OR STATUS = 'JAP' OR STATUS = 'OIL' OR STATUS = 'OILGS' OR STATUS = 'OILGSP' OR STATUS = 'OILP' OR STATUS = 'OILSD' OR STATUS = 'OILSDP' OR STATUS = 'OILWI' OR STATUS = 'OILWIP' OR STATUS = 'OILX' OR STATUS = 'PERMIT' OR STATUS = 'PLUG' OR STATUS = 'SWD' OR STATUS = 'SWDP' OR STATUS = 'TA' OR STATUS = 'TAO' OR STATUS = 'TAOG' OR STATUS = 'TAOGP' OR STATUS = 'TAOP' OR STATUS = 'TAP' OR STATUS = 'UNK' OR STATUS = 'UNKP' OR STATUS = 'WATRS' OR STATUS = 'WATRSP'
Omitted from the selection statements and not included in field buffereing were the following wells (less than 20): ABLOC Abandoned Location INJA Air Injection Well INJAP Air Injection Well, Plugged METHV Methane Vent METHVP Methane Vent, Plugged STRUP Structure Test, Plugged WASTE Waste Disposal Well

Process_Description:
WELL POINT SELECTION AND BUFFERING FOR FIELD POLYGONS (PER UNIQUE FIELD_CODE/NAME) AND BY FIELD TYPE:
All processing done in ArcGIS Pro 3.0.3.
1) Reproject Paystrats point feature class from Geographic NAD83 to Lambert NAD83 projected coordinate system (US Feet).
2) Add field FIELD_TYPE to feature class for classifying points as OIL, GAS or GAS STORAGE.
3) Select Layer By Attribute using SQL where clause statements shown in above in first process step. The result is three selection layers (Table Views).
4) Calculate FIELD_TYPE for each of the Table Views.
5) Run Pairwise Buffer tool on each field type Table View using the following parameters: a) Distance: 1320 US Survey Feet ("160 acre spacing") for the GAS and GAS STORAGE field types, and 660 US Survey Feet ("40 acre spacing") for the OIL field type. b) Dissolve Fields: FieldSummary, FIELD_CODE, FIELD_NAME, and FIELD_TYPE.
6) Run Eliminate Polygon Part tool on the outputs from running of the Pairwise Buffer tool to remove all contained polygon parts less than 2 million feet squared.
7) Append outputs (3) from Eliminate Polygon Part tool where FIELD_CODE IS NOT NULL AND FIELD_CODE > 0 to merge all feature classes into one, and to remove any features where there was no FIELD_CODE assigned.
8) Sort output dataset polygons on Shape_Area in descending order to show smaller polygons on top of larger polygons.
9) Post-processing: Visually inspected for general verification of field names, field types, and location of field outlines compared to input point source data as well as previous oilfields layer (2002); incorrectly-fieldcoded outlier points may exist and will be corrected as identified for future updates.
