Abstract:
Polygon outlines of Oil, Gas, and Gas Storage Fields in Illinois, with attributes for field code, field name, and field type. This is intended as a general cartographic reference for petroleum-related fields in the state, and is not a comprehensive listing nor a true areal representation. Individual small polygons resulting from the automated digital mapping process may have been removed from display, potentially affecting the visualization of certain very small fields and/or isolated producing wells.
Purpose:
To help the oil and gas industry by delineating the general outlines of Oil, Gas, and Gas Storage Fields in Illinois. This dastaset is suitable for use at 1:24,000 scale.

Oil and Gas well data were pulled from Oracle database. Points were manually verified, and those that did not previously have a FIELD_CODE value were assigned a FIELD_CODE, as appropriate, based on producing status and other information, such as point location and previously-compiled field data and maps.
Point shapefiles were created from the Oracle data, which for the creation of this polygon dataset, contained attribute FIELD_CODE for Oil wells, Gas wells, and Gas Storage wells.

Point shapefiles of fields converted to coverages, then gridded in ArcGIS at: a) 1320' (40 acre) cell size for Oil/Gas wells, and b) 1866' (approx. 80 acre) for Gas Storage wells using item FIELDCODE, resulting in raster output of areas coded for item. Raster output converted to polygon shapefile (generalize lines) in ArcGIS, then to polygon coverage.
In Arc, "eliminate" polys where FIELDCODE = 0 and area AREA < 2400000 (slightly larger than grid cell size (sq.ft.) to account for single-cell "zero" outliers, but not large enough to eliminate larger, valid interior holes within the field outines). "Dissolve" polygon on item FIELD_CODE to clear small remnant polylines from previous. "Centroidlabels" moved labels closer to center of polygon. "Spline" arcs-- cartographic 'round-off' of corners, edges from 'generalize lines' step above. "Build" as polygon.
Post-processing: checked for valid and/or large fields with FIELDCODE = 0 (labels moved outside by the line splining step. Move label back into field polygons, and recode as necessary). Visually inspected for verification of field names, general acreages, and location of field outlines compared to source point data.
Add item FIELD_NAMES, relate names to master list by field_code, add names.
Add item FIELD_TYPE, code and verify values.
Combine Oil and Gas, and Gas Storage fields into one polygon file
