Description:
Abstract:
This datafile shows the general elevation of the base of the Barlow Limestone in Illinois. These 20- and/or 100-foot isolines were contoured using Geographix and Z-map Plus software. The contours were created using over 50,000 data points from the ISGS Oracle database. The data covers only those portions of the state where the formation is present and does not include any coverage outside of Illinois where the formation may be present. The data was contoured using fault lines for control and manual adjustments were made to the contours as a final refinement of the computer created contours. This data set is intended for use at a scale of 1:100,000 or greater.
Purpose:
This data set was created as part of an effort to update some of the ISGS map products utilizing new data and software capabilities. This data set was developed in order to create an updated version of the map published by H.M. Bristol in 1968. These data are appropriate for use in local and regional thematic analysis. The data are not appropriate as a geodetic, legal or engineering base.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The attributes of the original ArcGIS dataset were reviewed throughout the course of the project by visual inspection of the contours for elevation anomalies and comparison with earlier published structure maps. Original point-source data associated with anomalies were checked for accuracy of location, correlation, and reporting of surface and bed elevation. These reviews were performed in an iterative fashion by two or three individuals.
Accuracy of point-source information is variable, depending on the source materials and the geologist. Some logs are precise measurements of depth, others may have errors or be rounded. Geologic correlations are, of course, open to other interpretations. Anomalous data from driller?s logs and drilling time logs were discarded, as no rectification could be made. Other anomalous data points were checked utilizing data in the corresponding well folder in the Geologic Records Unit of the ISGS. In most cases, if the anomalous data point did not have a geophysical log that could be reviewed the data point was discarded.
Formal evaluation tests have not been run, but repeated hands-on experience using the data for real-life applications has proven the quality of the database. Experience suggests that a small percentage of the data may contain errors that involve gross mis-location of points or mis-correlation of the formation in question.
This map did not make use of all available point-source data, but traces of previously mapped faults were used to control or modify contours. The fault traces were obtained by using ArcGIS software to georeference large scale maps of the Beech Creek (Barlow) formation and then digitize the fault traces present on the map. Fault lines were then examined to see how the new data affected their portrayal. Fault lines were corrected, and a few new faults were added, as indicated by the data. Only those faults mappable on the Beech Creek (Barlow) Limestone are shown on this map. Faults were assumed to be vertical in the contouring process.

Completeness_Report:
The point-source data was compiled by ISGS staff from paperwork submitted to the state by oil companies operating in the state of Illinois. These files are archived within the Geologic Records Unit of the ISGS. This subset was compiled from the ISGS?s Oracle database. No attempt has been made to compile all available data. This file does not represent all the well records on file at the ISGS, nor should the absence of data for the formation in question be interpreted to mean that the formation is not present.

Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
This is a generalized depiction of regional ground condition. Horizontal positional accuracy of the original point-source data is generally unknown. There is considerable variability depending on the source material. Some holes have surveyed locations and are accurate to within a foot, others have only description to the nearest forty acres. Overall, the database administrator estimates that most points are within 500 feet of their correct locations, but no scientific tests have been done to verify this.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Extraction of point-source data: Data points that contained an x/y coordinate and an elevation of the Beech Creek (Barlow) Limestone were extracted from the ISGS Oracle database and formatted for Z-Map Plus software program.
Contouring of Elevation: Elevation of point-source data was contoured using Halliburton?s Z-Map Plus software. Final grid size was determined through trial-and-error methodology, however, final grid cell size is currently unknown due to the loss of personnel, and loss of data as result of server issues. Comparison to preliminary contouring attempts suggests that the final grid cell size was less than 5,000 feet, and could potentially have been in the range of 1,000 to 2,000 feet. Default settings were used for all other contouring parameters. Data was contoured using fault lines for control, and faults were assumed to be vertical in the contouring process.
Post-contouring Processing: 1. The Z-Map Plus .DAT file was exported and imported into Geographix software package. 2. The .DAT file was then exported from Geographix as an ESRI compatible shapefile. 3. The shapefile was opened in ArcGIS and clipped using polygon shapefile of the extent of the formation in Illinois.
